RSLC Celebrates News Of Louisiana House Gaining A New Supermajority
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, Louisiana Democratic Representative Francis Thompson, announced his plan to switch parties from Democrat to Republican. The switch now gives Louisiana Republicans a supermajority in the House of Representatives for the first time ever, and brings the total amount of supermajorities in House and Senate chambers for Republicans nationwide up to 24. Republicans now have 70 votes in the House, which is enough to override a veto from Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards. As Republicans celebrated this news, RSLC President Dee Duncan released the following statement.
“Today is a good day in Baton Rouge, as Republicans will now have a supermajority in the Louisiana House of Representatives for the first time in its history,” said RSLC President Dee Duncan. “After adding seven new supermajorities after the 2022 election, the RSLC is proud to aid in the fight to expand and preserve Republican majorities across the country. We look forward to seeing what Louisiana Republicans can continue to accomplish and congratulate them on this milestone.”
Background
In 2022, the RSLC defied the odds by overcoming an onslaught of national liberal spending to net-gain 35 seats, secure seven new supermajorities and help Republicans maintain a hold on 58 of the 99 state legislative chambers across the country. Those supermajorities include:
Florida: Republicans will now have their largest Republican majority in state House history.
Iowa: The supermajority Iowa Republicans have secured in the Senate will be the first supermajority the state has seen in either chamber in 50 years. Republicans also now have representation in all 99 Iowa counties in the state House.
New York: Republicans net-gained the most seats in the Assembly since 2010. Republicans will now have their largest New York City delegation in the Assembly in 40 years.
Oregon: Republicans broke out of the super-minority in both the House and Senate, net-gaining seats in both chambers for the first time since 2010.
Montana: Republicans secured a supermajority in the state Senate. This will be the first time Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers since 1975.
North Dakota: Republicans increased their majorities in both chambers and now have their most state legislative control since the 1960s.South Dakota: Republicans hold all but 11 seats in the state legislature.
