VIRGINIA HOUSE DEMOCRATS BLOCK ANTI-CRITICAL RACE THEORY LEGISLATION
Washington, DC — As backlash to the Democrat effort to politicize public education intensifies around the nation, the Democratic majority in Virginia’s House of Delegates yesterday blocked legislation that would have curbed the teaching of critical race theory (CRT) in the commonwealth’s public schools. This follows months of Virginia parents and teachers rallying against CRT and other efforts being considered by Virginia Democrats, such as ending advanced placement diplomas and eliminating advanced math courses prior to the eleventh grade.
“House Republicans in Virginia are fighting to keep politics out of the classroom and for children to be taught to judge others by the content of their character. House Democrats? They continue to take their cues from the teachers’ unions funding their campaigns and refuse to stand up to the far-left’s efforts to indoctrinate the commonwealth’s students. Virginia families will be horrified to learn that the extreme liberals running Richmond yesterday opposed an effort to stop the politicization of public school curriculum in the commonwealth once and for all and will punish them in November.” -RSLC Communications Director Andrew Romeo
Yesterday’s vote should come as no surprise given the past comments of Virginia Democrats on the issue of politicized curriculum. In July, vulnerable House Democrat Joshua Cole promoted American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten’s vow to fight back against legislation banning critical race theory.
A recent poll found that 50% of respondents, including 57% of Independents and 25% of Democrats, in the Virginia counties of Loudoun and Fairfax oppose the teaching of critical race theory in public schools. Virginia Republicans’ legislation would’ve addressed parents’ growing concerns about what children are actually learning in school.
