Republicans Defy Expectations, Flip Michigan House of Representatives Despite Being Outspent Over 4:1
Washington, D.C. – Michigan Republicans overcame millions of dollars in outside spending from national outside liberal groups to successfully flip the Michigan House of Representatives and end Democrat trifecta control in Lansing. Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) President Dee Duncan issued the following statement following Republicans’ stunning victory:
"The RSLC was laser focused on bringing back balance to Lansing where the Democrat trifecta control, in just one year, drove more residents and businesses out of Michigan than in nearly three decades,” said RSLC President Dee Duncan. “We knew that to be successful we had to invest early and combat the inevitable onslaught of liberal outside spending that would flood the airwaves across the state. Through our robust early and absentee ballot program we were able to get Republican candidates across the finish line and retake control of the Michigan House chamber. Michigan Republicans will now have the power to serve as a check and balance on the disastrous agenda Gretchen Whitmer and Michigan Democrats have put forward. ”
The Republican State Leadership Committee prioritized flipping the Michigan House chamber at the beginning of this election cycle by investing in the Great Lakes State early as part of the organization's historic $38 million investment across 21 states.
The RSLC continuously stressed that investing early would be the best way to combat the historic amount of money numerous outside groups on the left poured into state legislative races, with groups like the DLCC, the States Project, and Forward Majority PAC, investing over $175 million nationwide in down-ballot races. In Michigan, Democrats spent $28.6 million through paid media alone.
