GOP FLIP: Republicans Win in Iowa House District 29

Ends Decades Long Streak of Democrat Control in District

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Republican Jon Dunwell was elected in Iowa House District 29 tonight, giving state Republicans their second flip of a state legislative seat in a special election in 2021. Dunwell’s victory came in a district that Democrats have controlled for decades.

“Congratulations to Jon Dunwell on continuing the momentum for state Republicans in Iowa and across the country this year by flipping Iowa House District 29 red,” said RSLC President Dee Duncan. “Jon is a community leader and his agenda of lowering taxes and promoting individual freedom provides a refreshing alternative to Joe Biden’s job-killing policies. Tonight’s victory in a long-time rural Democrat stronghold is further evidence that the left has sold out middle America to advance the priorities of their coastal elite megadonors.”

Dunwell’s win follows Ryan Fazio’s August flip of a Connecticut district that Biden won by more than 25%, a special election Democrats, including the DLCC, said was a “harbinger” for the midterm elections. It also reinforces a trend pointed out by CNN in August of how “Republicans have been outperforming the 2020 baseline by double-digits (in special elections) since the beginning of July.”

The Democrats’ setback in Iowa also makes clear that Joe Biden continues to be a drag on state Democrats across the country -- something that was reinforced in late September when the DLCC was caught photoshopping the President out of a fundraising solicitation for an upcoming special election for a Democrat-controlled seat in New Hampshire. The lack of enthusiasm for state Democrats can also be seen in the DLCC’s fundraising, as the RSLC outraised them by $3 million in the third quarter fundraising period.
