Embarrassing Failed Recount Pushed By Askew and DLCC Confirms Virginia Republicans Flipped House of Delegates
Karen Greenhalgh’s Victory in HD-85 Certified Once Again
Washington D.C.- Following a recount conducted by Virginia election officials, Karen Greenhalgh’s victory over Alex Askew in House District 85 was again certified this morning by a three-judge panel. The result ensures that Virginia Republicans, who were outspent by more than 2:1 in 2021, flipped at least six seats and will regain control of the House of Delegates.
“We are glad that this recount, which was nothing more than an embarrassing effort by the DLCC and Democrat leaders in Virginia to prolong blowback from their failures in November, has finally concluded and the new Republican majority can get on with serving the needs of all Virginians," said RSLC President Dee Duncan. "Today’s result is just another confirmation that the people of Virginia last month rejected the far-left’s failed policies and voted for an optimistic future that empowers parents, brings safety to our streets, lowers costs, and supports small businesses. Virginia Beach will benefit from having a leader who finally puts the community above national politics again, and the RSLC was proud to play a role in Karen Greenhalgh's victory and the historic effort to flip the House of Delegates.”
The recount was not automatic and was pushed for by Askew, Virginia Democratic leaders, and the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC). While Democrats have also requested a recount in House District 91 that has yet to be completed, Virginia election officials have already indicated that A.C. Cordoza’s victory – the seventh seat Republicans flipped last month – is expected to stand. DLCC President Jessica Post last month was mocked by her own party for originally asserting on twitter that the recounts were automatic and had to correct her tweet.
RACE BACKGROUND
The RSLC and its affiliated groups were heavily involved in drawing a stark contrast between Greenhalgh and Askew. These efforts started with a television campaign that began in August holding Askew accountable for voting to raise the cost of living for Virginians. The RSLC PAC ran additional ads highlighting how Askew doubled down on raising the gas tax and teamed up with Karen Greenhalgh on a television ad exposing Askew for admitting he is a “partner” to Washington liberals. Askew made numerous unforced errors throughout the race that were captured by the RSLC’s historic tracking program, which was profiled by the Hill last month.
