RSLC Celebrates New Supermajority In North Carolina House Of Representatives
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, North Carolina State Representative Tricia Cotham (D-112), held a press conference announcing her intention to switch her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, giving Republicans in the state House of Representatives a Supermajority. Republicans in the Tar Heel State will now have supermajorities in the House and Senate, giving them the number of votes needed to override a veto from Democrat Governor Roy Cooper. Republicans will now have 25 supermajorities in House and Senate chambers nationwide. RSLC President Dee Duncan issued the following statement:
“The conservative agenda is alive and well in the Tar Heel State, as Republicans in Raleigh now have a supermajority in both the House and Senate chambers,” said RSLC President Dee Duncan. “It will now be much easier for Republicans to continue legislating an agenda that focusses on creating jobs, safer communities and a strong economy that benefits all North Carolinians. The RSLC is proud to congratulate North Carolina Republicans on their accomplishment that only strengthens our message of building the cornerstone of the conservative movement nationwide.”
Background
Republicans have now gained two new state supermajorities in 2023, with Louisiana Republicans gaining a supermajority in the Louisiana House last month. This comes on the heels of defending our Republican supermajority last night in Wisconsin, where State Senator-Elect Dan Knodl (WI SD-8) won his special election, allowing Republicans to maintain a 2/3 majority in the Wisconsin Senate.
In 2022, the RSLC defied the odds by overcoming an onslaught of national liberal spending to net-gain 35 seats, secure seven new supermajorities and help Republicans maintain a hold on 58 of the 99 state legislative chambers across the country. Those supermajorities include:
Florida: Republicans will now have their largest Republican majority in state House history.
Iowa: The supermajority Iowa Republicans have secured in the Senate will be the first supermajority the state has seen in either chamber in 50 years. Republicans also now have representation in all 99 Iowa counties in the state House.
New York: Republicans net-gained the most seats in the Assembly since 2010. Republicans will now have their largest New York City delegation in the Assembly in 40 years.
Oregon: Republicans broke out of the super-minority in both the House and Senate, net-gaining seats in both chambers for the first time since 2010.
Montana: Republicans secured a supermajority in the state Senate. This will be the first time Republicans hold supermajorities in both chambers since 1975.
North Dakota: Republicans increased their majorities in both chambers and now have their most state legislative control since the 1960s.
South Dakota: Republicans hold all but 11 seats in the state legislature.
