New Jersey Assemblywoman Jean Stanfield Joins “It’s Bigger Than You Think”
Washington, DC — The Republican State Leadership Committee today released a new episode in its podcast series “It’s Bigger Than You Think,” featuring an interview with New Jersey Assemblywoman and 8th District Senate candidate Jean Stanfield. Stanfield was the first female sheriff of Burlington County, serving her community for 18 years. She has also served as assistant prosecutor in Burlington County. During the episode, Stanfield addresses New Jersey’s lack of affordability, how to make New Jersey more of an economic hub, how her experience as a sheriff for nearly two decades has given her a unique perspective on rising crime in Democrat cities, and the negative effects of the defund the police movement.
The podcast follows recently released polling by the RSLC that makes clear the radical liberal agenda being implemented by Governor Murphy and his allies in the legislature are turning New Jerseyans away from the Democratic Party, creating opportunities for down-ballot Republicans in November’s election.
Stanfield’s insight on crime comes as it is skyrocketing across the country under the Democrats’ anti-law enforcement agenda and as Democrats continue to push to defund the police. In a recent poll by Navigator Research, crime ranked ahead of the pandemic as the top issue for all voters for the first time. Concern over crime has reached the highest point in 4 years with 59% of Americans saying crime is “extremely or very serious” — its highest point in 2 decades. Sixty-four percent of Americans oppose the movement to defund the police, and fifty-two percent strongly oppose stripping law enforcement of funding.

Jean Stanfield on Republican priorities in New Jersey:
“You know the first thing we’d have to do is tackle our property tax issue. To do that, we have to deal with school funding and school taxes because that’s the bulk of our homeowners’ property taxes…You also have to make this a friendlier climate for businesses. It’s very difficult for businesses here and that was pre-pandemic. The taxes are very high. Unemployment insurance is going up… There’s a lot of work that needs to be done, but it is doable.”
Jean Stanfield on Democrats’ defund the police movement:
“Democrats have been pushing that whole theory of defund the police. It’s a horrible concept. It’s going to hurt the very communities we are trying to help the most, where crime is high. I’m all for making sure that our police department are behaving properly and there are bad apples. Nobody wants to see a bad cop removed more than a good cop. And, we can work towards those things. When I was Sheriff we did so many programs to bring the community together.”
Jean Stanfield on countering the false Democrat defund the police narrative:
“It has not been a Republican point at all. I think our candidates have to be very firm about that, let people know where they stand, that we support the police. We think policing needs resources to do a good job, and that we’re our there talking to people… We need to talk to people. We need to let people know where we stand.”
Jean Stanfield on the cause of increased violent crime:
“The hands of police officers have been tied by the local governments and all the changes that have happened in some legislatures to really make police officers afraid to act. We’ve seen it in New Jersey. They passed a crazy bill that would’ve made it a criminal act for police officers to intervene when a minor had marijuana or alcohol. This is the kind of stuff that makes it very difficult for officers to go in and confidently do the job proactively like they need to do to keep crime down.”
