GOP FLIP: Greenhalgh Pulls Off Upset in Virginia House District 85

Victory Comes Despite Being Outspent By 2.5:1 in a Biden District

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Republican Karen Greenhalgh defeated Democrat incumbent Alex Askew to flip House District 85. Greenhalgh overcame being outspent by 2.5:1 to claim victory in a district that Joe Biden carried by double-digits in 2020.

Greenhalgh was also part of the RSLC’s “Right Leaders Network,” the committee’s recently announced initiative to enhance its efforts to support more women and minority candidates in state races to help grow the Republican Party from the ground up.

Karen Greenhalgh ran a smart race exposing her opponent’s extreme record,” said RSLC President Dee Duncan. “She tapped into a frustration with how Democrat-run Richmond has become more concerned with serving their ‘partners’ in Washington than their own constituents. Virginia Beach will benefit from having a leader who finally puts the community above national politics again, and the RSLC was proud to play a role in Karen’s victory.”

The RSLC and its affiliated groups were heavily involved in drawing a stark contrast between Greenhalgh and Askew. These efforts started with a television campaign that began in August holding Askew accountable for voting to raise the cost of living for Virginians. The RSLC PAC ran additional ads highlighting how Askew doubled down on raising the gas tax and teamed up with Karen Greenhalgh on a television ad exposing Askew for admitting he is a “partner” to Washington liberals.
