WASHINGTON – The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) today released the below statement following Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s announcement of the ‘Texas Backs the Blue Pledge.’
“Everyone should be able to agree that police reform and backing the women and men in uniform who risk their lives to protect ours are not mutually exclusive – Governor Abbott and Texas Republicans are proving it,” said RSLC President Austin Chambers. “State Democrats have had ample opportunity to speak up and condemn the violence against police officers who put their lives on the line, but they choose to remain silent. Sadly, with the Left’s consistent embrace of lawlessness, we don’t expect them to find principle in the next 54 days. We will, however, continue to support state Republicans who are committed to public safety and sensible reforms – and remind every Texan voter of the stark difference between each party’s record on the issues.”
The ‘Defund the Police’ movement has taken root in Austin where the city council unanimously voted to cut the department’s budget by one-third. At a press conference in August, Governor Abbott announced a legislative proposal that would freeze property tax revenue for cities that vote to defund police departments. Since defunding the police, Gov. Abbott has noted Austin has seen an increase in crime, specifically murders. The Texas Backs the Blue Pledge is meant to squash momentum for the Defund the Police movement throughout the state and to end the threat of anarchy in Texas.
