Virginia socialist sends mailer depicting female Republican being controlled by men
WASHINGTON – One of Virginia’s self-described socialist candidates for state legislature on Wednesday reached a new low in his attacks on Republican candidate GayDonna Vandergriff. In a gross, misogynistic, and inaccurate direct mailer made public this morning, VanValkenburg depicts Vandergriff as a puppet of five men with hooks into an image of her face.
In case you missed it, Vandergriff this morning responded in a Facebook post:
“I knew when I ran for office that my opponent would come after me, but I never imagined that it would come to this. Schuyler VanValkenburg recently sent a mailer out with an offensive and sexist depiction of me being controlled by men. It’s not true and beyond the pale. It’s misogyny that has no place in the 21st century. I am a strong, professional woman who earned an MBA while raising a family – no man gave it to me – and I earned my spot on this ballot the same way as Schuyler did. What kind of signal does this send to young women? It is never okay to depict women like this. Schuyler VanValkenburg needs to apologize to every woman, especially the young girls he teaches in the classroom, for this sexist depiction of a woman as a puppet of men. I’m my own woman.”
The Republican State Leadership Committee has invested heavily in support of Vandergriff’s campaign and will continue to strongly oppose Sexist-Socialist Schuyler VanValkenburg.
