WASHINGTON (February 27, 2019) – The members of The Republican Secretaries of State Committee (RSSC) were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Oregon Secretary of State Dennis Richardson, following his battle with brain cancer. Elected Secretary of State in 2016, Richardson was the first Republican elected statewide in Oregon since 2002, and the first Republican Secretary of State elected since 1980. Richardson, a father of nine children and grandfather of thirty-one, passed away at his home last night surrounded by family and friends.
“We are saddened to learn of Secretary of State Dennis Richardson’s passing. He was a quiet leader and reliable friend who performed the work he loved with civility, grace, and kindness. His strength and determination through his battle with cancer showed us true heart and character,” said Washington Secretary of State Kim Wyman, the 2018 Chairman of the RSSC. “Dennis leaves a lasting legacy of honor and service to our country, the state of Oregon, and our organization. We were blessed to work with him and know him as a friend. We are sending our prayers to Cathy and their children. Dennis was an inspiration to us all, and he will be greatly missed,” Wyman added.
“I am saddened by the loss of Dennis Richardson. Dennis was a principled man – a Vietnam veteran, an attorney, a legislator, and a leader,” said Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. “I had the pleasure of knowing Dennis through our work together as secretaries of state. He was a man who had a great joy about him and fiercely fought his cancer. On behalf of my family and the state of Missouri I wish to extend my most heartfelt sympathy to his wife Cathy, his children and grandchildren and the people of Oregon,” Ashcroft added.
“Dennis Richardson was a dedicated and passionate public servant who was a strong advocate for all Oregonians during his tenure as Secretary of State and as a state legislator. Our prayers go out to his family and staff during this time of loss,” said Matt Walter, President of the Republican State Leadership Committee.
The Republican Secretaries of State Committee (RSSC) is committed to electing Republican secretaries of state across the country and preserving the integrity of elections. In addition to overseeing free and fair elections, many secretaries also oversee trademark and business registration, run the library and archives operation, manage professional licensing and perform other critical tasks that encourage economic development within the state. The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) welcomed the RSSC to its group of caucuses in 2007 and, since then, the committee has assisted in victories, leading to the election of 28 of the 51 secretaries of state offices nationwide today.
The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) is the largest caucus of Republican state leaders in the country and the only national organization whose mission is to elect Republicans to multiple down-ballot, state-level offices. Since 2002, the RSLC has been working to elect candidates to the offices of lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state legislator, the judiciary and other down-ticket races. State-level Republicans maintain 61 of 99 legislative chamber majorities across the country, hold 25 lieutenant governor seats, and control 28 secretaries of state offices.
