New NDRC Obama Video: the Audacity of Hypocrisy

Why was it ok for Barack Obama to “redraw his own (state Senate) district northward to include some of Chicago’s wealthiest citizens, making the district a powerful financial and political base that he used to win his U.S. Senate seat, a few years later”? (Ryan Lizza, “The Obama Memos,” The New Yorker, 1/30/12)

WASHINGTON – Assuming America simply forgot Barack Obama’s hypocritical and calculated rise to the U.S. Senate and the Presidency in the 2000’s by drawing his own state Senate district in Illinois, the former President and liberal activist released a new video today for disgraced former Attorney General Eric Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC) to cast doubt on constitutionally protected legislative map drawing, a process that historically has been left closest to the voters.

“After record losses of nearly 1000 Democrat-drawn state legislative districts during his Presidency, Barack Obama and Eric Holder are again making their case to rig the system and establish Democrats as the fairest arbiter of legislative map drawing.  How rich, after the Obama-Holder team invoked some southside-Chicago antics to redraw Barack Obama’s own Illinois Senate district to aid his run for U.S. Senate.  From losing record numbers of seats with bad candidates and bad liberal policies, the Obama-Holder effort has also had their ‘sociological gobbledygook’ social engineering theory rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in recent weeks, making them more ‘fast and furious’ to repair the losing legacy of the Obama Presidency at the state level,” said Matt Walter, President of the Republican State Leadership Committee.

The NDRC’s strategy mirrors the RSLC’s 2010 Project REDMAP, which helped Republicans capture record high statehouse majorities since 2010 over multiple election cycles.  The combined forces of the organized left, from the NDRC to groups like Forward Majority, have publicly stated they intend to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to oppose the RSLC’s 2020 Project REDMAP.

FACT:

Obama worked on his “ideal map” to redraw his own district during the partisan redistricting of Illinois, which “may have been the most important event in Obama’s early political life”:

The New Yorker: “The partisan redistricting of Illinois may have been the most important event in Obama’s early political life.” (Ryan Liza, “Making It; How Chicago shaped Obama,” The New Yorker, 7/21/08)

  • The New Yorker: “Like every other Democratic legislator who entered the inner sanctum, Obama began working on his ‘ideal map.’” (Ryan Lizza, “Making It; How Chicago shaped Obama,” The New Yorker, 7/21/08)
  • When asked about his views on redistricting, Obama said: “There is a conflict of interest built into the process … Incumbents drawing their own maps will inevitably try to advantage themselves.” “In an article in the Hyde Park Herald about how ‘partisan’ and ‘undemocratic’ Illinois redistricting had become, Obama was asked for his views. As usual, he was candid. ‘There is a conflict of interest built into the process,’ he said. ‘Incumbents drawing their own maps will inevitably try to advantage themselves.’” (Ryan Lizza, “Making It; How Chicago shaped Obama,” The New Yorker, 7/21/08)
  • The New Yorker: “… Obama helped redraw his own district northward to include some of Chicago’s wealthiest citizens, making the district a powerful financial and political base that he used to win his U.S. Senate seat, a few years later.” “While drafting the new political map, Obama helped redraw his own district northward to include some of Chicago’s wealthiest citizens, making the district a powerful financial and political base that he used to win his U.S. Senate seat, a few years later.” (Ryan Lizza, “The Obama Memos,” The New Yorker, 1/30/12)

CLAIM:

OBAMA: The NDRC is “the first-ever comprehensive strategy to make redistricting fairer.” “OBAMA: “That’s why I supported former Attorney General Eric Holder in starting the National Democratic Redistricting Committee. It’s the first-ever comprehensive strategy to make redistricting fairer.” (NDRC, “President Obama on Gerrymandering, Redistricting, and the NDRC,” YouTube Video, Published 7/11/18)

FACT:

The NDRC’s “strategy borrows from the [RSLC’s] Project REDMAP, which helped Republicans capture statehouse majorities in 2010”:

The NDRC’s “strategy borrows from the GOP’s Project REDMAP, which helped Republicans capture statehouse majorities in 2010.” “Former President Barack Obama tapped Holder last year to head the National Democratic Redistricting Committee, which will pump millions of dollars into statehouse elections between now and the 2021 redraws. The strategy borrows from the GOP’s Project REDMAP, which helped Republicans capture statehouse majorities in 2010.” (Travis Fain, “Holder, Democrats rally over hopes to take back redistricting,” WRAL, Updated 7/16/17)

CLAIM:

OBAMA: “It’s fighting … to elect candidates who support fair redistricting.” (NDRC, “President Obama on Gerrymandering, Redistricting, and the NDRC,” YouTube Video, Published 7/11/18)

FACT:

The NDRC’s stated purpose is to build a plan to “favorably position Democrats for the redistricting process”:

According to IRS filings, the NDRC’s stated purpose is to “build a comprehensive plan to favorably position Democrats for the redistricting process through 2022.”
