Orange (County) Resistance Defeats California Blue – Strips Liberal Supermajority in Senate
Republican State Leadership Committee-Backed Recall Effort Holds Newman Accountable for Liberal Tax and Spend Platform
WASHINGTON (June 6, 2018) – With 8.4 million registered Democrats, California has the highest registration of liberals compared to any other state, and last night they lost their supermajority status in the California state Senate thanks to the successful recall of liberal Senator Josh Newman. Newman supported Senate Bill 1, which increased gas taxes and vehicle fees in California, and according to a recent poll by the Los Angeles Times, 51% of liberal-dominated California now want to repeal the gas tax.
The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC), which is the largest caucus of Republican state leaders in the country, whose mission is to elect Republicans to multiple down-ballot, state-level offices invested almost $400,000 in the combined efforts to recall Newman and elect his successor, Ling Ling Chang. The RSLC invested $75,000 directly with the California Republican Party, and donated the maximum of $4,400 to Chang’s campaign. The RSLC also invested over $300,000 in an ad buy to drive Republican turnout in state legislative races on primary day in southern California.
“In the deepest blue of the seven states Democrats control in totality, Republicans have again proven that with the right candidates and the right message we can win. With Republicans at historic highs, we have seen this trend in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and California within the past seven months alone. The RSLC congratulates Ling Ling Chang on her hard-fought victory and sent a message to California Democrats that their state, and the nation, can do better than a regressive gas tax which stagnates economic growth and hurts working families. We will continue to make that case in deep blue states throughout this year,” said Matt Walter, President of the Republican State Leadership Committee.
About the RSLC
The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) is the largest caucus of Republican state leaders in the country and the only national organization whose mission is to elect Republicans to multiple down-ballot, state-level offices. Since 2002, the RSLC has been working to elect candidates to the offices of lieutenant governor, secretary of state, state legislator, the judiciary and other down-ticket races. After Election Night 2017, state-level Republicans maintain 67 of 99 legislative chamber majorities in red, purple and blue states, hold 31 lieutenant governor seats, and control 30 secretaries of state offices.
