This year alone five Republican Lieutenant Governors have gone on to assume the role of Governor including Alabama’s Kay Ivey, Indiana’s Eric Holcomb, Iowa’s Kim Reynolds, South Carolina’s Henry McMaster, and Vermont’s Phil Scott.

The RSLC announced that Andrew Wynne will lead the Judicial Fairness Initiative (JFI) for the 2017-2018 election cycle. Wynne previously was the Senior Director for State Legislative Affairs at the US Chamber of Commerce. The JFI launched in 2014 and is the only national political organization focused on the electoral process of judicial branches at the state level.

Republican state Representative Yvette Herrell declared her candidacy for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional district according to the Santa Fe New Mexican. Herrell, first elected in 2010, said she decided to run because she “understands the importance of having a voice in Washington that will represent our values, our culture, and our future.”

Indiana’s Secretary of State Connie Lawson was announced as the next chair of the National Association of Secretaries of State this week at the group’s annual conference. After the announcement, Lawson told Indiana Public Media, “If you don’t have a seat, you don’t have a voice, so it’s important for us to have that voice on the commission.”

Investor’s Business Daily reported that states in the best fiscal condition for 2017 tended to be governed by Republicans. Their finding was based on a study released by the Mercatus Center this week that ranked all 50 states based on an audit of their financial statements. 19 of the top 20 states in the best fiscal condition according to the study have legislatures where both chambers are controlled by Republicans.
